Triangle Vocabulary Lesson

For my Literacy in Middle/ High class, we had to create vocabulary mini lessons that would pertain and fit into our bigger unit that we are creating this semester. We were encouraged to make it fun and engaging while still teaching the important words that are important for our unit. I chose to use a Nearpod to present my information on triangles.
When I was thinking about creating my lesson, I was trying to figure out how to make it fun and engaging for students. I struggled a lot with that idea and still am when thinking about the presentation I put together. I decided to use a Nearpod so I could make it interactive to see what knowledge students had about triangles through the drawing function. This made it possible for me to pull up examples on the board and keep it anonymous to students so they didn't know whose work I was putting on the board. This then gave me an idea going into the next slides what some students knew and didn't know. Then I went into the vocabulary slides that included pictures. After I went through the vocabulary words, which you can see in the video, I gave a short exit task to see what students retained from the short lesson. They did really well and we discussed the questions after I had collected everyones responses.
When the lesson was over, I then discussed with my classmates what I could have done to improve the lesson. I wanted feedback on how to make it more interactive. They all said that they enjoyed the Nearpod since they have been been in a math class where they had a powerpoint of any kind. They also gave the ideas of giving guided note taking sheets so they could put them in what would be their, "math journals". Another classmate also mentioned maybe having cut out triangles and definitions and matching them. I thought this was a great idea and I might include in my overall unit.
I need to work on being more confident in front of the classroom and with answering students questions and how to approach questions that I may not know the answers of straight off the top of my head. I also want to work on being more energetic in the classroom and excited about the material I am teaching. I am excited to plan future lessons and try them in front of my classmates and future students so I can work on my weaknesses and bring fun and enjoyment to a productive learning environment.

  1. Hi, Kelsey! I like how you used the drawing function on Nearpod to gage your students' understanding of triangles before starting the lesson. That was a great idea. You may also think about having your students compare the various types of triangles that you define. I also need to work on being more confident and energetic when teaching a lesson. Do you think that you will prepare differently for the upcoming mini lessons?

  2. Hi, Kelsey! Like Kayla, I also like that you used the drawing function on Nearpod to make it more creative. I think it's a great way to teach math vocabulary, and it helps you get a sense of what students know and need to know in the future while still keeping it a low-stakes assignment. What type of vocabulary words did you decide to use, and how many of them were there? Also, did you find any connections to the PC's or parts of the mission pillar? I'm curious to find out! I think this sounds like a great lesson and it seems like it provided you with some good feedback for future experiences.

  3. Kelsey, I love that you had a conversation with your group to get more ideas from them. I hope you continue to invite feedback in this way throughout your teaching career!
